MESSAGE FROM ESBAS PRESIDENT MARY MILLS TUNCER
Mr. Kaya TUNCER, the founder of the Aegean Free Zone, passed away on the 7th of January 2012. Yesterday, we honored him with over 250 of his friends and admirers in attendance. We are all grateful for the values he introduced to our country.
I have been elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors by the General Assembly. I want to thank them for their confidence in me.
We are committed to maintain an our efforts to increase the contributions of the Aegean Free Zone to the economy of Izmir and our country under the policies and principles followed by Kaya TUNCER.
The Aegean Free Zone has ever growing momentum in terms of both employment and trade volume. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, there will be an 8% increase in the trade volume as compared to the previous year. The current employment in the Zone has reached 19,500 people and it is expected to reach about 21,000 by the end of year.
The zone has reached almost complete occupancy. We continue our negotiations with the Ministry of Economy regarding the inclusion of the additional expansion area of about 600,000 m² within the borders of the free zone.
The Zone has experienced traffic problem as the result of the inadequacy of the access roads following the opening of the Optimum shopping center. We continue our work of monitoring and measuring the traffic flow to determine how to best solve this issue. On the other hand, we are discussing potential solutions with the Gaziemir Municipality, the Metropolitan Municipality and the General Directorate of Highways. I certainly believe that we will find a permanent solution to this issue within a reasonable time period.
Mary MILLS TUNCER
