While Turkey currently enjoys many of the economic benefits of European Union membership, its quest for permanent status has been an on-going, well-publicized and politically complicated undertaking.

Turkey's vibrant economy is a complex mix of modern industry and traditional agriculture. It has a strong and rapidly growing private sector, yet the State still plays a major role in some basic industries, banking, transport and communication.

For 2004, Turkish GDP is projected at 200 billion USD, Real GDP Growth +4.2 %; Consumer Price Inflation +11.6%; Unemployment over 10%.

Turkey's major trading partners are Germany, USA, Italy, France, UK and Russia. 50% of the Country's exports (mostly agriculture, textiles, iron, and steel) are to the EU. Imports are weighted to oil, machinery and chemicals.
