In general free zones are defined as special territories that are physically separated from the other parts of the country and where the prevailing legal and administrative arrangements for commercial, economic and fiscal fields are not or partly applied; and more incentives are offered for industrial and commercial activities.
Although free zones are not entirely alike, they all provide advantages in inflow of foreign currency, increase in employment, foreign capital, high technology, management experience and bridging between the domestic economy and the regional industry.
Companies in the zone are close to international markets and their general expenses are less. They have an experienced workforce, they do not pay customs duty, receive rich financial incentives and have access to all municipal services through a single entity.
Today, there are assumed to exist nearly 3000 free zones in more than 120 countries. In Turkey, there are 21 free zones, which have reached a total trade volume of $17.8 billion in 2009.
