Clusters: Today's Magic Word in Economic Development

What is a Cluster?

A Cluster is a group of companies in a related industry(s) that local resources (e.g., information, trained labor, source materials, R&D, etc.); that use similar technologies; and that form mutually rewarding linkages and alliances. A well-developed cluster enables the quick spread of new manufacturing techniques and general operational strategies; provides advanced know-how for the labor force; promotes increased competition and productivity; provides access to cutting edge technology; encourages faster innovation through cooperative research; and stimulates the formation of joint ventures and new businesses.

The Aerospace Cluster in Izmir: Right Stuff; Right Place

ESBAS, in conjunction with the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defense, has pioneered Turkey's first Aerospace Cluster. Participants now include Fokker Elmo (Holland), PFW (Germany), Lisi Aerospace (Turkey) and The Kale Group (a Turkish Company in the process of striking a joint venture with Pratt & Whitney USA, a United Technologies Company).

These companies are all involved in offset or in the supply-chain systems of major OEMs like Lockheed, Boeing, Airbus, EADS and TAI. The Aerospace Cluster has created an effective lobbying and support mechanism for like-minded international companies in Turkey; it has created a database of all aerospace SME's in Turkey; it supports university aerospace education, training and employment. And it has organized aerospace conferences. Currently, a new Aerospace Technical School is formed by the Aegean University in Izmir with the support of the Turkish Air Force.
